Interview with Zach Weintraub at BAFICI, presenting his new film “The International Sign for Choking”

The young director Zach Weintraub recently presented his film “The International Sign for Choking” at the Buenos Aires International Independent Film Festival. A love story between the city and the filmmaker.

-What made you choose Buenos Aires to shoot your movie?

-I´ve studied here for over five months in 2008 and as it usually happens to anyone that comes here for a short term for some strange reason you want to come back. I just felt that it was time to make my next movie and thought “Why not in Buenos Aires?”. This city is the only place that I have been for more than a month aside of USA. I felt very familiarized with the city so once I was back at the US I began to write. In the middle of the process, my first movie was invited to participate of the BAFICI, so I came back to Buenos Aires. This visit  really helped me to refresh my memory, it had been two years already since my last visit and encouraged me to make this new project happen. It helped me to consider logistic issues, like where I was going to stay, where could I get the resources and support for the shooting and which places could I use as a proper location for the story.

-In your movie we can see several places of the City of Buenos Aires. How did you made the selection and what could you add about Buenos Aires locations in general?

It wasn´t hard for me to make the selection of the locations for my movie because they were all part of my memories as a student here. Places that I used to go when I lived here: bars, parks, streets, Cinemas, it was all in my head already. Unfortunately there were a lot of scenes that were cutted from the last and final cut of the movie. Buenos Aires is a really big city with a lot of different places and I had the possibility to shoot in every location that I wanted too.

-How did you find the right local producer for your movie?

-At the beginning we weren´t going to look for a local producer, but as we kept on going with the pre production we realized that we needed one. That´s why we called Manuel Garcia from 791Cine, distribution company in charged of my first movie´s distribution. He started helping us with specific things regards to the production and finally ended being a partner in this project due to his huge collaboration. He was a key peace of this equation, it was just four of us making this movie, he helped us a lot in terms of locations and in many other aspects of the process too.-
